The Diapering Saga: One Month Down with Many More to Go.

Hello crunchsters. Today’s quick cloth diapering update is brought to you by a 0412 Corbin wake up call and day old coffee modified with powdered creamer and stevia. BLAH! Not exactly how I wanted to start my Saturday, but alas here I am.

Where to begin… Well we are still going strong with our little fluff butt and this cloth diapering adventure. Every day it seems to get a little easier while I find shortcuts and dive into it all head first. It has been a little over a month and I’m not sick of them yet so that’s a plus. In fact, I am venturing out into the world of cloth wipes and will soon be making my first real batch of them. You know, the two ply kind with sewn edges so that they don’t fray and get ruined in the washer/dryer. I’m pretty excited about it, if you couldn’t tell! I even told my husband today that we needed to stop buying toilet paper and start using family cloth ourselves. Ha he chuckled, then quickly shut that thought down. He may be right, that is a little much huh? Thanks for talking me down off that ledge, honey but we will see how far down this rabbit hole we can actually go in the future.

Anyway, we did end up getting an array of different kinds of cloth diapers. AIO, pocket, shells, even a swim diaper…. just to name a few. I have to say that the pocket ones are currently my favorite, but that may change as we keep learning and evolving with Corbin’s growth and his inevitable time in a daycare that doesn’t cloth diaper. Zack has really come through with taking on the cloth duties while I’m at work and he is home with Corbin. He seems to like them too. Even my MIL, who was not shy with voicing her opinion about our choice to cloth diaper from the very beginning has tried her hand at it while Corbin was visiting. It may have been on backwards, but he stayed dry so that’s a win for everyone! Practice makes perfect and I think that she may be warming up to the idea.

My biggest grump is that we haven’t quite gotten into the swing of what to do with the soiled diapers between washings. We currently have a separate laundry basket specifically for the dirty diapers, liners, and wipes downstairs in the laundry area. Since it’s just an open air laundry basket it doesn’t do much for the smell and if you asked my husband “he has the strongest smeller around” so that’s just not going to cut it in the long term. It has worked so far and I think is may just be about adapting what is going to work best for us.

We are on an almost every fourth day wash rotation, which seems to do us well. I’ve gotten into a routine for our washes and drying, so that part is going pretty well. I’m proud of how far we have come in such a short time. And stuffing and prepping them isn’t too bad either, plus I get to look at all the cute designs and dream up outfits while I’m doing it.

Since Corbin is room-sharing with us, our stash is kept on the bottom of his changing table. It’s covered and hidden away so it’s functional and not a big problem, however they just don’t get displayed like I was hoping. Everyone else couldn’t care less, but that is part of the reason that I am excited Corbin will be getting his nursery set up very soon. I can’t wait to finalize the layout and get the ball rolling on that project. We’ve got a lot to do to make sure that everything goes smoothly and the space is utilized well. I’m dreaming of the best place for them all as I type this. That will be a whole new blog post of it’s own coming soon, so don’t miss it.

As I wrap this short piece up I’m realizing that I’m kind of terrible at this whole review thing. We haven’t been at it long and I’m still trying to find my groove. I am nowhere near a real decision on whether or not this was a good idea, but I am happy that we are giving it a go none-the-less. Maybe I’ve jumped the gun on making this my cloth diapering update, but hey that just means that I will have another, even more honest review in the future as I continue to try to perfect our system. I’ll also be sharing pictures once Corbin’s space is up and we are happy with the flow of things. Stay tuned!
