Diapering: To Cloth or Not to Cloth, That is the Question.

As you may have read in my bio, my family and I are getting ready to welcome our first son and my first born in April 2019. I am both excited and terrified. I feel like nothing can really prepare you for parenting in this day and age. And even though I have been helping to parent my stepdaughters since their father and I met almost two years ago, it’s just not the same as doing literally everything from conception to birth and beyond. It’s extremely hard to find your way while stumbling through the changing times of what we “should and shouldn’t” do for/with our children. Nowadays everyone has to be a pro and have their own opinion on even the most minute details. Not surprising I’m sure, but choosing how to diaper your child is no different.

When my husband first proposed the idea of cloth diapering our son I couldn’t help but laugh, that is until I realized just how serious he was. Though neither one of us was cloth diapered as children it definitely has been a growing trend with our generations’ children. The first thought that ran through my head was, dang that sounds like a lot of work. I’m already tired and the baby isn’t even here yet!! How can I be expected to have a new baby, figure out cloth diapering, take care of two other small children while my husband works the opposite shift as me, eventually prepare to go back to work full time, and make sure I survive to do it all over again the next day? He must think I am superwoman or something! While that is a sweet sentiment, it all seems so unrealistic at the moment. After the shock of the idea wore off I decided that I would do some research to see what our options were.

So the good news is…. With all the upgrades and knowledge learned through good old trial and error, the cloth diapering systems have gotten so much more mom/baby/working family friendly over the years. This is a huge selling point for me. This and the fact that we throw away so much money on disposable diapers throughout a child’s first 2-3 years, not to mention all the waste, and what it does to our environment. Now I’m no true tree-hugger, but whatever my family and myself can do to help this world last longer, sign us up!!!

I know that we have a long way to go and many hurdles to overcome before we find what’s right for us, but I am confident that through continued education and everyday use we will become cloth diapering geniuses. Or in the very least I will be able to say that we learned a great lesson and tried to live outside the box. I will give an honest review once we actually start implementing our cloth diapering because at the moment I am so new to everything that it just wouldn’t be worth a read. Until then……

  1. So much YES! But coming from a mom of 3 (7,4 & 4 months) you’ll get the hang of it! I also work full time. My hubby works late nights so I’m always alone. You’ll do great!
